The East Coast Conference Championship teams marched into the Tarpon Springs site of the State Championships on a mission to upset the pre-season favorites of the Florida Spring Youth Football Tournament and stunned the West coast teams by lifting four of the six divisional State trophies.  After four years in operation, an FSYFL State trophy has never been won by a East Coast team, but Jacksonville’s Oceanway Buccaneers, the Jensen Beach based Treasure Coast Spartans and the Port Orange Hawks decided to place their stamps onto FSYFL State history in a terrific display of youth football.

In the Mitey Mite division the Azalea Junkyards Dawgs fought hard but met their match at the hands of Head Coach Michael McNair and his young team, led by the great running of #23 Chris’ton Johnson.  The Azalea Junkyard Dawgs Peewee division team defeated first time tournament participants, Orange Park Panthers led by Coach Michael Crawford from Jacksonville.  The speed of the 2011 State Champion Dawgs was in the end too much for the Panthers.  However the Panthers, a new entrant to the FSYFL tournament for 2012 should be very proud of their accomplishments.  Coach James Canatta and his Treasure Coast Spartans pulled off a double header by winning both the Supers (34 – 0) and Midget (19 – 13) divisions.  The Midget game ended after a triple overtime nail-biter.  Perrenial State Championship heavy weights, Ft Myers Firecats under Coach Eric Rivera were finally defeated following an unbelievable show of great youth football talent.  Following the antics in the Midget game, the JV division put on a “game of the year” with a quadruple overtime display that left fans and parents alike on the edge of their seats.  Coach Shawn Belz from the Port Orange Hawks led his resilient team over three time State Champion Coach Hector Avila with a balance of run, pass, and stout defense, finally stopping the Firecats in overtime.  As if that was not enough, the Varsity division provided further fireworks.  In a match up of undefeated teams the Ft Myers Stallions finally managed to beat long time FSYFL contender John Cheney and his Port Orange Hawks team, that saw the winning touchdown scored in the last 40 seconds of the game.

The FSYFL State Championships saw numerous improvements this year,  with the addition of the Tennessee based Football Tech combine, an 18′ jumbotron to screen the games and the Rising Star Leadership Awards to name a few.  The FSYFL Pro Bowl games will take place at the Orlando Fairgrounds on Saturday April 28th, starting with the younger divisions at 12 noon.
